Rea wins Race 1 as Davies crashes out

Jonathan Rea was handed the victory in Race 1 at Aragon as his battle with Chaz Davies ended when the Ducati rider crashed out of the lead on the penultimate lap.

It was Ducati versus Kawasaki in Spain as Davies and Rea battled for the victory while Tom Sykes and Marco Melandri fought over the final podium position.

Excluding two brief stints in the front, it was Davies who held the advantage over Rea but only by meters.

The rivals engaged in a game of cat and mouse, as for every lap that Rea would draw Davies in, Davies would respond by etching out a small gap.

Rea continued to line the Ducati up down the long 950m back straight, setting himself up for the slipstream pass.

He eventually made it, at turn 8, but is again short-lived as Davies fought back to lead at the start of the penultimate lap.

However, Davies' charge came to nought when he lost the front end of his bike, crashing out of the lead and out of the race.

Rea romped to an unchallenged victory ahead of Melandri and Sykes.

Behind the leading three were the Yahama tea-mates as Alex Lowes recovered from the engine problem that left him P12 in superpole to finish fourth after getting the better of Michael van der Mark.

Jordi Torres was sixth ahead of Aprilia's Leandro Mercado and Eugene Laverty, while Stefan Bradl secured the all-important P9 that will be pivotal come Sunday's reverse grid.

Aryton Badovini retired with a technical problem while Roman Ramos also failed to reach the chequered flag.

Xavi Fores crashed at turn 1 while running in fifth place. He was able to remount but later retired with his Ducati on fire.
