Rea praises Davies after Aragon win

Jonathan Rea was full of praise for rival Chaz Davies after a maiden victory at Aragon increased his stranglehold on the race for the World Superbike title.

Kawasaki rider Rea continued his perfect start to the 2017 season, recording his fifth win in five races as Davies crashed out on the final lap to hand him victory after an engaging battle.

After ensuring Davies was okay following his fall, Rea praised the Welshman, but said his pace was probably just enough to deserve the victory.

“Chaz was strong in areas where I was not, and I was strong in areas where he was not, so it was a case of me learning a lot in the race,” Rea said.

“The stopping performance, direction change and grip conservation of the bike was really good today and I felt I still had a tyre to fight with at the end.

"But in the middle section of the track, where Chaz was just in the front, I could not maximise any time to try to go away out front.

“The only thing I could do in that race was ride shotgun and put as much pressure on as I could and wait for a mistake. The door opened up a few times because Chaz missed a few apexes but then he went down in the penultimate lap.

“I hope Chaz is okay, but for me it was a perfect opportunity to win another race. It is a crash-gifted win but I will take it because I felt I rode well.”

The win helped Rea extend his lead at the top of the World Superbike championship standings to 47 points, with

With Davies not scoring and Rea claiming another win he has extended his World Superbike championship lead to 47 points over Kawasaki teammate Tom Sykes. Davies is in third place a further 10 points behind.
